Competition and Sports in American Society

Competition and Sports in American Society plays a key part in American Culture. The COVID-19 pandemic exposes this, as sports took a hiatus since Mid-March; when the NBA shut down, and then other sports proceeded to shut down activity until they could get a handle on this unfortunate outbreak. Sports was just starting to heat up with the NBA, NFL hockey runs for the playoffs were just getting started. Teams were about to jockey for position in their prospective sports. The NFL had to zoom the draft; the MLB had to postpone preseason and the start of the season. Golf tournaments canceled or moved to a later date. This all being said; the viewing of these events on National TV, as well as the live fan participation just evaporated. Years and years of coverage of these events; like clockwork all of a sudden stops.

What are they talking about in the barbershops? Whoops, they are shutdown too! Conversations are now about basic survival in getting the economy back to working, or just plain out getting things back to normal, but the need for sports competition whether it be instructional, pee wee, all the way through the pros is essential in building character and having life experiences. When this passes we will remember this time as a void in our lives. Competition in American life drives the economy in so many ways, but most of all it has a enormous effect on how we can respect each other, grow leadership skills, develop courage and produce a better humanity within ourselves. A quote from Billie Jean King; “Champions Keep Playing until they get it right”. Keep that quote in mind, as we all try to strive to getting it right.

There is a lot of crazy things happening out there right now, that is to say that it’s always been the case, but maybe we need the Competition and Sports, to help quell some of the ill craziness that we continue to hear about in our society today. How about you sports fans that are tired of watching the old reruns of sports, or the sports fans that are constantly awaiting news coverage on the virus that would effect our futures in a good way? This pandemic will pass, but this is the time to rise above all of this, and get it right.
